This Day in History: 1896-11-27

1896: Also sprach Zarathustra by German composer Richard Strauss, inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche’s book of the same name, is first performed. In 1944, Strauss himself would conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in an experimental high fidelity recording of the piece (made on a German Magnetophon reel-to-reel tape recorder, then by far the most advanced sound recording device in existence, with quality still considered excellent today).
