681: Declaring them “a plague on the kingdom,” King Erwig of the Visigoths in Hispania calls for the total removal of Jews from the nation. There is a fatal flaw in the decree, however: If a Jew has himself sprinkled with “holy water” and says he believes in the Jewish offshoot religion of Christianity, he can remain.
