Slovakia: Ethnic Nationalist Party Now 4th Strongest in Parliament

by James Harting

THE pro-National Socialist/Fascist “People’s Party — Our Slovakia,” known by its initials LSNS, is now the fourth strongest party in the Slovakian parliament.

On February 29, the LSNS won 17 seats in parliament (up from 14 in 2016), and increased its popular vote to 229,581 (up from 209,779 in 2016). But its overall portion of the vote remained constant at about 8%.

Slovakia has a multiparty system consisting of about a dozen serious parties and countless tiny fringe groups.

There are some questions concerning the outcome: polls taken immediately before the election showed the LSNS with massive popular support. Pundits predicted that it would become the second strongest party with 24 or more members of parliament.

The election saw the ruling party ousted by opposition parties running on an anti-corruption platform. Governmental corruption is rife in Slovakia. During the election, a reporter investigating graft and bribery was murdered.

Slovakia has a population of about 5.5 million, with only 2,600 Jews. It is a little different than some other European nations. It was first granted its independence in 1939 by Adolf Hitler. It fought as part of the Axis during World War II until finally being overrun by the Red Army in 1945. Except among “anti-fascists,” the term “Nazi” does not have the same negative connotation that it has elsewhere in Europe.

The LSNS continues the legacy of the pro-Hitler regime, which scholars describe as “clerico-fascist.” In recent years, however, it has sought to distance itself from the past. Today its domestic policy is focused on anti-Gypsy, anti-immigrant sentiments, on economic reform and on social justice. Its foreign policy is pan-Slavic and strongly anti-NATO and anti-EU. (Slovakia is a member of the EU.)

The leader of the LSNS is Marian Kotleba. The party motto is “With Courage against the System!”
