August Willich was one of six German immigrants who served as generals in the Union Army. In 1870 he returned to Germany and offered to serve Prussia in the war against France but was rejected because HE WAS A COMMUNIST.
There were also German immigrants in the Confederate armies, but not as many Germans and certainly not as many Communists.
German Texans sided with the Union during the Civil War and ended up with a group of them being massacred by Confederate soldiers:
